The impending war between Intel and Microsoft
FYI: I think Cringely is wrong on a few key points. I think that the entry-level computer cost is significantly lower than the figures stated. He is completely discounting the used computer market, and the upgrade market. There are a lot of half-empty boxes that are upgraded into working machines every day. I do not think this market can be discounted.
The other thing is that the scenario completely discounts Google, who could significantly affect all players. Actually I think this is the real beauty of Google as a company. They affect all players, without discrimination. Google's possibe plans for an OS and/or significant desktop presence may add a lot of volatility.
